Marketing Attribution in GA4: A Practical Guide for B2B Teams
Marketing Attribution in GA4: A Practical Guide for B2B Teams

Attribution is where marketing credibility is won or lost. If the CFO cannot connect spend to pipeline, budgets get cut. GA4 gives you better tools than Universal Analytics ever did — but only if events, UTMs and CRM data are set up with discipline. This is the practical setup I use with B2B teams.
- Define conversions around pipeline (qualified leads, demos), not page views.
- Strict UTM governance is more important than which attribution model you pick.
- Compare data-driven and last-click side by side to understand each channel.
- Connect GA4 to your CRM so attribution ends at revenue, not form fills.
- Track AI search referrals as their own channel group.
Start with conversions that matter
Mark only business-relevant events as key events: demo requests, qualified form submissions, trial sign-ups, meetings booked. Downloads and scroll depth are useful signals but should not be counted as conversions.
Pass a lead value or lead score with each key event so GA4 can weight channels by quality, not just volume.
Fix UTM governance first
Most broken attribution comes from inconsistent UTMs: "LinkedIn", "linkedin", "li" all as separate sources. Create a shared UTM sheet with allowed values for source, medium and campaign, and lock it.
Never tag internal links with UTMs — it overwrites the original source and breaks sessions.
"The best attribution model is the one your finance team agrees to use every week."
Choose and compare models
GA4 defaults to data-driven attribution. Use it as the main view, but compare it with last-click in the Model Comparison report. Channels that look much better in data-driven (often paid social and content) are assisting; channels strong in last-click (brand search, direct) are closing.
Report both to leadership with one sentence of explanation. That builds trust faster than any single number.
Create an AI search channel group
Build a custom channel group that captures referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai. Without it, AI traffic hides inside "Referral".
Many AI-influenced visits still arrive as direct or branded search, so pair this with brand search trends and "how did you hear about us" fields.
Close the loop with your CRM
Store GA4 client ID and first-touch UTMs in hidden form fields, then push them into HubSpot or Salesforce. Now each deal carries its original source, and you can report pipeline and revenue by channel.
Import offline conversions (qualified, won) back into GA4 and ad platforms so bidding optimises for revenue, not leads.
Build a weekly attribution review
Keep one dashboard: spend, leads, pipeline and revenue by channel, with data-driven and last-click side by side. Review it weekly with sales and finance.
